We’ve been doing this just shy of a year now with several writers in the community, and wanted to leave the directory here of all the writer’s who gave it a go and went on this adventure. The Workshop isn’t specific to one genre, it crosses the broad literary spectrum.
This is something personal for me because it’s something I shared amongst creatives at the beginning of my own writing journey as it unfolded. Originally, its inception was in an art cult somewhere in Northern California, and it became a pastime between Emil Ottoman(Emil) and I, for about a decade of writing as lovers, creatives, and co-partners in life. Other prompts not listed of mine or his that are not on this list are strictly between Emil & I during our creative ventures spanning over the past decade that had been rewritten and will remain complete until published in book format. Sometime last year, I decided I would host these workshops that helped Emil & I progress as writers, and it was fun for writer nerds like us.
Publication of an anthology may be a future goal with the writers' consent, if that’s something they wish to do when we’re at a place to do so. This is still a free workshop (that’s right, free 99), and there is no money flowing through it. This is a space of passion for the craft, trying new things, and coming together as a community. If I ever have extra spendy money, I will address it and make sure this can become a certain reality.
Writing progression in my opinion isn’t linear or universal to one author.
In the Substack Universe, it started a little wonky as I was figurin’ how to manage it with a cap of one hour. One workshop cut mid-sentence at the hour. I am not entirely tech savvy, so I wasn’t sure how to run it.
Now it progresses from one hour to six+ hours. Whether they are one on one conversations running or a collective of writers discussing their own processes, their lives, and what’s happening in their future during its entirety. This is a global network made possible by connections made on Substack.
The purpose of hosting these events is to have a social gathering amongst writers of Substack as we exchange prompts and write through the style of Stream of Consciousness POV. Additionally, it can open perspectives if we use words we’re not familiar with from other authors. I claim no ownership of the concept, as I am sure it’s been around long before I was ever born. This is the only way I can describe the way I write, and it’s a way that I want to share with other writers/artists within the community.
Not all of the writers have posted their prompts, and we don’t have an archive of everything that has been ever written. Some work is public and some is private. Most writers choose their photographs for their work at their own discretion, or none at all. Some of the words, I don’t even remember, but I will try to keep this updated as we go on and edit it as necessary to lock down certain prompts related to the workshop. If any authors who have contributed had their prompts lost in the sauce, let me know— I will add it in.
Some words return and show up in the next workshop, some are new and strange.
We have regulars when people can make the time. The rules in the introduction remain the same, times are ever shifting. See the Introduction Recap(Introduction to Workshop). I hold 3 spaces for those who can’t make it and want to participate, cap at 20. (Including the 3 absentees. That means 17 could go to the workshop, and 3 absentees where I send prompts to writer’s via email.) Generally, workshops don’t get that large, the biggest was 12; but I am open to lengthening it depending on need. For larger groups I recommend 60+ words to keep it random. I can’t promise that there will be a perfect amount of prompts during the workshop. People come in and out when they can.
If you did not follow the rules and posted partial/made your own prompt from a splice of words, it’s not part of the workshop. One of the major rules is that authors do not write their own prompts. If writers write their own prompts, I consider it immediately void as per the rules. Writers don’t have to use the exact words for the prompt exercise, they can write metaphors for the prompts. 30 words+ are tickets to entry for the workshop. For any questions about the rules, see Introduction Recap.(Introduction Recap)
If your question hasn’t been answered, dm me.
This workshop will continue to be hosted as long as I am allotted the time to do so. I will try to run them as much as possible throughout the years.
In this list shows all the work that everyone put forth to experience the Stream of Consciousness POV workshop, as others have gone forth creating magic everywhere they go. Show these authors some love, they’re all working their tails off to hone their craft and continue in other promising projects within the fiction community. It has been my greatest pleasure working with new faces and those that have become regulars in the workshop.
I look forward to the next workshop. This will be updated periodically.
